What is Blackjack?
Blackjack, also known as twenty-one, is a card gambling game. It allows play by one or more players and a dealer. Each player competes against the dealer. But players do not play against each other. For the sake of simplicity in this article, all examples will feature just a single player. Players use one or more decks of 52 cards to play Blackjack. Blackjack ranks among the most popular casino banking games globally, played by a vast number of people. The objective of the game is to beat the dealer in one of the following ways:
- Get 21 points on the player’s first two cards (called a “blackjack” or “natural”), without a dealer blackjack;
- Reach a final score higher than the dealer without exceeding 21; or
- Let the dealer draw additional cards until their hand exceeds 21.

Points of Blackjack Hands
Each card in blackjack is worth a different number of points.
Numbered cards – those of ranks between two and ten are worth a number of points equal to their printed number. For example, a card often is worth ten points, or a card of five is worth five points.
Jacks, queens, and kings are each worth ten points.
Aces can be worth either one or eleven points and are essentially worth eleven points unless that would result in the hand going over 21 points, in which case they can count as one point instead.
Players call hands that count an ace as eleven points “soft” hands and hands where aces must count as one point “hard” hands. The difference is that a soft hand cannot go over 21 with an additional card, since the ace may simply go from counting as eleven to being worth a single point. Splitting and Doubling Down
Players also have two other options that they may invoke when they receive their initial two-card hand. If the player has two cards of the same rank, he may choose to split their hand into two. To split their hand, players place a second bet of equal size to the original bet and receive a new second card for each hand. They then play each hand separately. Some rules systems allow players to split their hands additional times if they receive a pair after splitting. In some card games, players can split a pair into two separate hands, each played with a new card. For example, if a player splits a pair of 4s, they will have two separate hands, each starting with a 4 and a new card. If the player receives another pair when splitting, they may have the option to split again, creating multiple hands to be played for individual bets. Each hand has its own outcome, so it is possible to win some hands and lose others when splitting pairs.
The player may also choose to double down on their first two cards. By doubling down, a player agrees to take only one more card, after which they will stand. It means that they are stuck with whatever hand they have after receiving their third card. If a player wishes to do this, they will need to make a second bet of equal size (if they do not have enough money to do this, they may double down for less than the original bet size). This option allows the player to wager more money when the odds are strongly in their favor, with the accompanying risk of ending up with a bad hand that they normally would have continued hitting with.
